Employee Spotlight: John Beshara

Employee Spotlight: John Beshara

When political science major John Beshara went looking for an internship during his junior year at Youngstown State University, it was important that he was contributing to not only his resume, but his community. His search led him to YSU’s Center for Nonprofit Leadership, which placed him with the Land Bank.

The relationship between the Land Bank and YSU is a long one, with nine out of the last 10 interns staying on as employees. John is no different. As he begins his senior year this fall, John has made the transition to part-time employee.

We recently sat down with John to ask him about his journey.  Here are his answers.

Why did you want to intern with the Land Bank?

It seemed like a great opportunity to learn and grow as a political science student, while also being able to give back to the community in a way. The Land Bank’s mission was something I agreed with and wanted to be a part of.

Briefly describe your work with the Land Bank.

I assist with the Greening and Adaptive Reuse and Residential Side Lot programs. Most of my work is done with the RSL Program. I do intake, advise requestors, update the database, do inspections, send out applications, and prepare files for director’s approval.

Tell us what sparked your interest in part-time employment here.

I would say the opportunity for meaningful experience is what sparked my interest in part-time employment with the Land Bank. Being that I have one year left in school, I thought it presented me with a great opportunity to gain more knowledge and learn more about the practical application of policy.

How did the YSU Center for Nonprofit facilitate your internship?

The center provided me with the resources, connections and guidance throughout the process. They sent out an email with a list of each organization and laid out everything for me and other students to get started. We had a seminar every week for 12 weeks, which was very informative and only enhanced my experience this summer.

Can you name a goal you hope to achieve at the Land Bank? or identify something you are proud of from your internship?

My main goal is to help the Land Bank continue to hit strides with their programs. I hope to continue to gain more knowledge and grow as a student and professional.
