Land Bank Installs New Campbell Park, Community Garden Formerly Occupied by Vacant Houses

Removal of abandoned homes can provide big relief to a neighborhood, but productive use of the remaining space can be even more positive.

That’s why the Mahoning County Land Bank has established a flexible park in Campbell where run-down homes once stood.

Bright Avenue Park in Campbell is the land bank’s largest greening project to date, sitting on land that used to have two vacant houses next to three abandoned lots. The post-demolition park houses a little free library and an ethnic herb garden, symbolic to the diversity in Campbell.

The demolition and greening of Bright Avenue Park was part of a concentrated effort of demolishing and greening more than 28 houses in a 20-square-block neighborhood in Campbell, bordered by Tenney Avenue, 12th Street, Robinson Road and 16th Street.

Members of the National Honor Society at Campbell Memorial High School volunteer to manage the library.

Leaders from the Land Bank, the Rotary Club of Youngstown, Campbell Mayor Nick Phillips, members of Campbell City Council and the Campbell Memorial High School National Honor Society recently celebrated the opening of the newly developed park.
