Land Bank to Plant Clover in Demo Spaces, Reduce Mowing Across Mahoning County

The Mahoning County Land Bank will soon begin planting clover in areas where housing demolitions have occurred to reduce the need for mowing throughout the county.

The Land Bank and its contractors will begin clover seeding at several area demolition properties by early May and extend the practice to additional sites as more demolitions take place over the next two years.

“After a demolition, we will plant clover instead of grass as a means to reduce the need to mow as often, which will benefit the health of our community,” said Gary Davenport, project coordinator at the Land Bank. “We also plan to plant native wildflowers in appropriate demolition areas to support pollinator habitats.”

Clover requires little to no mowing and doesn’t need fertilizers. It’s also able to tolerate drought and remain green throughout the summer months, and attracts pollinators, such as honeybees, which are increasingly losing their habitats.

“Clover provides many benefits and requires less maintenance and harsh chemicals than regular grass,” said Debora Flora, executive director at the Land Bank. “We are excited to begin planting clover in demolition areas throughout the county, which we feel is a safer and healthier option for residents and the atmosphere.”
